About Jitney

As the first work in August Wilson's ten-play cycle, Jitney is set in and derives its name from the unlicensed taxi service that transports passengers to parts of Pittsburgh avoided by the city's licensed cabs. The jitney station and the surrounding community serve as a microcosm of America in the late 1970s and set the backdrop for Wilson's discussion of the social and political context of that time. As the middle-aged jitney drivers of this story battle the urban renewal that threatens to close down their station and wrestle with issues of alcoholism, disenfranchisement, and the prospect of hope, Wilson weaves together a complex and fascinating narrative of African American life. Their dilemmas are based on a time long gone, but their stories are universal.

About August Wilson

August Wilson has twice received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his plays Fences and The Piano Lesson. All of his plays received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, and Fences received the Tony Award as well. He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was the recipient of both the Rockefeller and Guggenheim fellowships.

One of contemporary theatre's most distinguished and eloquent voices, Wilson writes not about historical events or the pathologies of the black community, but as he says, about "the unique particulars of black culture…I want to place this culture onstage in all its richness and fullness and to demonstrate its ability to sustain us…through profound moments in our history in which the larger society has thought less of than we have thought of ourselves."
